Burberry, a British luxury fashion house, was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry when he was 21 years old, and had just finished a drapers apprenticeship. He opened a shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, which focused on outdoor attire. Thomas Burberry invented the iconic trench coat, which is still a key piece in Burberry’s collections, and in 1891 opened a shop in Haymarket, London. Burberry pieces were worn by many famous explorers in the 20th century, including Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton, who led an expedition to cross Antarctica in 1914, because of the renown of Burberry’s outdoor clothing.
Burberry now specialises in quality clothing, perfume and accessories, and was granted a Royal warrant by the Queen as a recognition of service to the Royal family for over five years. Their tartan pattern is the most famous and recognisable of Burberry’s designs, but has also become the most copied. This hit Burberry hard as people were put off their favourite design because it was no longer associated with quality and class, but teenage gangs. Burberry working hard to re-establish itself as a high class brand, and it is employing celebrities like Kate Moss and Emma Watson to model their clothing in spreads in various fashion magazines. In this, it appears to have achieved some notable success, you only need to take a look at their website here to see the quality that the brand now portrays.
Burberry’s customers have some complaints, mainly about customer service on Burberry’s website. One reviewer wrote that if you have a problem with a Burberry product, you are totally on your own, and not to expect quick refunds (if any) if you receive a damaged product. Another complained of poorly made sunglasses, and one questioned why anyone would buy Burberry, as it is still labelled a “chav brand”. However, not all were so negative. A couple said they had received good customer service, and one commended Burberry on doing a good job of making itself current while remaining classic.
Burberry’s prices for accessories are not as high as other designers. Most shoes were in the range of £200 to £500, with a few below and above this bracket. The bags mostly fell between the £500 and £900 bracket, with a couple below, and a few python skin designs pushing up in to the thousands. The range in price in their clothing is much greater, from £150 for a simple vest top, to a few thousand for a leather jacket.
