Jimmy Choo
Jimmy Choo’s most fervent celebrity fan was Princess Diana, who used to buy each of the designs in several colours so that she could wear them with all her evening wear…
Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat (now known as Dato Jimmy Choo OBE), the founder of Jimmy Choo Ltd., was a Malaysian fashion designer whose family owned a shoe making business in Penang, Malaysia. Choo made his first shoe when he was 11 years old, and in 1986 opened his first workshop in Hackney, North London. He was quickly noticed for his shoe designs and in 1988 Vogue magazine featured an 8 page spread of his work, a record breaking number. In 1996 he and the editor of British Vogue accessories, Tamara Mellon, co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd, which now makes handbags as well as shoes. Jimmy Choo’s most fervent celebrity fan was Princess Diana, who used to buy each of the designs in several colours so that she could wear them with all her evening wear. She bought so many that Jimmy Choo said that he could not keep track of the numbers of shoes he had sold her.
Jimmy Choo’s are well known for being expensive high end shoes, featured in songs like Shontelle’s ‘Tshirt’, in which it is suggested that they are worn to impress and stand out. They are all hand made, which makes their incredible detail possible, high quality and highly desirable, which is demonstrated somewhat by the price tag… They are certainly not an everyday shoe, but something that is designed to make the wearer feel special and unique and noticed.
Current collections are Project Crystal, Ugg, Cruise 11 and Choo 24:7, the most expensive of which is Project Crystal, which features the ‘Ciara’ shoe, a £1895.00, 5.3” healed, suede and crystal sandal. Jimmy Choo has combined with UGG Ltd. to create a number of Ugg boots that remain based on the original sheepskin boot, but have the iconic Jimmy Choo detailing and embellishment. It has also now combined with Hunter Ltd, creating a crocodile skin embossed, leopard print lined, gold buckled welly boot, in a variety of colours and a long and short style.
