Mulberry was founded in 1971 by Roger Saul and his mother Joan, in 1973 they opened their first factory in Somerset. It is a British luxury leather goods company, that first specialised in lifestyle leather products like poacher bags. The original factory, called ‘The Rookery’, is still used for their leather goods production. In 2006 Mulberry started an apprenticeship program that gave the local youths an opportunity to learn production skills in the factory, after which they would offer them a job. Mulberry now designs womenswear, both sex’s accessories, and women’s shoes; their handbags remain their most famous items.
There are many Mulberry handbag reviews, with many different views. There are complaints that Mulberry bags are not as good quality as they once were; that their design is weak and the straps tend to break. Some say that the leather is too delicate; getting damaged easily in the rain even with waterproofing, and as a result peeling. However, others dispute this image of Mulberry’s as being flimsy by saying that they last for years, still looking as good, when five years old, as they did when they were bought. Their design is normally highly commended; a mixture of innovation and classic style, and they are often described as “perfect” or “gorgeous”. It is possible that counterfeit bags produced in China and mistaken for the genuine article have resulted in the comments about their durability.
Mulberry bags have one of the greatest price ranges of any handbag designer. Their cheapest bags are the nylon holdalls, which hover around the £200 mark. A clutch can be purchased for around £250, but there are also clutches that rise to the £1000 mark, and there exists an elaborate clutch costing just over £3000. Most of their other bags remain between £500 and £2500 but a messenger bag can be purchased at the bargain price of around £300.
The womenswear range is reasonably priced for high end designer clothing, a simple t-shirt costing £150, and tops ranging up to £500; for shorts, jeans and skirts expect to pay £200 to £400 in most cases, with a few exceptions. Coats and jackets are mostly between £700 and £1500 (leather jackets being the reason for the higher figures), with a few outside this bracket. It is, however, possible to see why Mulberry’s handbags are still its most popular and successful item. Their handbag collections have a great range and lots of different colours and materials for all tastes but their clothes are quite plain and not so different from something you could pick up in high street stores for a lot less money.
